2 songs because it's my home stretch

So I am in my last week of my M.A. program and then it will officially be summer.  Time to re-read Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince before the movie comes out and to read New Moon and the other books in the Twilight series.  And of course to work on school papers, communication conference presentations and other things to "get a head start" on my Ph.D.

It is also summer because my small mountain town has multiplied times ten in the last two weeks with tourists and vacationers.  Its a good thing I live outside city limits and live five minutes away from "the bar."  With this has come bonfires, PBR drinking, and dancing to bluegrass in the wee morning hours.  My friend also just left for Wisconsin last night because she is pregnant and in need of help from her parents.  She announced her marriage last night and we celebrate complete with again campfire, PBR, and bluegrass.  We also took pictures of the happy couple and I think for the first time in my life I was considered a bride's maid.  They danced to Wagon Wheel (Old Crow song) and partied it up.  It was the start to my summer even though I still have a paper to write, and a presentation to give.

My goal this summer is to live up this mountain living because I may never do it again until I am old and grey.  So it is time for BBQ, hikes, the lake, camping in a new tent, and loving the people around me who have so graciously let me into their lives for the last is it two years (maybe three.)  It's been a blast and I can't wait to make this summer memorable.

So two songs...love songs...for those I love...and for the place I live.

Natalia Zuckerman's, Only Trees
I can't find the lyrics for this song but sometimes we have to experience the performance and shy away from textocentrism.

Second...
Yellow Brick Road, Kris Delmhorst
This is a song dedicated to me...because yes...everything is about me
--
I'm off to see the wizard in his castle on the hill
And I never once have known him and I do not know him still
Because his face it is magnificent but you'll never see his hands
And the way he throws his voice around I don't know where he stands

I'm off to see the wizard with his curtain and his crowd
But my hands are not trembling and my head it is not bowed
Cause I'm not looking for any answers, no truths to be revealed
All that I am asking is to show me something real

I'm not on no yellow brick road, got a mind and a heart and guts of my own
I'm not looking for a one to set me free
I'm not on no yellow brick road, I'll find my own way home
I'm just looking for someone to walk with me

Hey you behind the curtain tell me what is it you see:
From where you sit does it appear that everyone is on their knees?
Their eyes are wide and hopeful and the line grows at the door
Do you sit up there and wonder how you'll ever give them more?

Well I'm not on no yellow brick road, got a mind and a heart and guts of my own
I'm not looking for a one to set me free
I'm not on no yellow brick road, I'll find my own way home
I'm just looking for someone

Don't say that it's not lonely up above the crowd
Don't tell me you don't find yourself longing for the ground
And when I asked him one more time won't you tear the curtain down,
He said don't you know there's nothing here but me,
And I said baby who'd you think I came to see?

I'm not on no yellow brick road, got a mind and a heart and guts of my own
I'm not looking for a one to set me free
I'm not on no yellow brick road, I'll find my own way home
I'm just looking for someone to walk with me

Swan Dive and Iowa

I hadn't heard this song but coincidentally I heard it the week leading up to AND at the Madison Progressive 100th Anniversary concert.  It's Swan Dive by Ani DiFranco.  I have been under a lot of pressure lately and this song helps me to deal with it.  Kathryn do this, Kathryn write this paper, work at this job, teach this class, work this job...argh!  You know the drill-sometimes people expect too much and you just have to live for yourself-jump from the high place and feel the cool breeze on your face as you fly instead of sink.  I just have to remember to be true to myself-do what I think I need to do and not what others think I should do.  And I have to keep my principles strong, balanced but radical.  So this is my song to myself.  Yay!

Swan Dive: Ani Difranco:

cradling the softest, warmest part of you in my hand
feels like a little baby bird fallen from the nest
i think that your body is something i understand
i think that i'm happy, i think that i'm blessed

i've got a lack of inhibition
i've got a loss of perspective
i've had a little bit to drink
and it's making me think
that i can jump ship and swim
that the ocean will hold me

that there's got to be more
than this boat i'm in

'
cuz they can call me crazy if i fail
all the chance that i need
is one-in-a-million
and they can call me brilliant
if i succeed
gravity is nothing to me, moving at the speed of sound
i'm just going to get my feet wet
until i drown

and i teeter between tired
and really, really tired
im wiped and im wired but i guess its just as well
because i built my own empire
out of car tires and chicken wire
and i'm queen of my own compost heap
and i'm getting used to the smell

and i've got a lack of information
but i got a little revelation
and i'm climbing up on the railing
trying not to look down
i'm going to do my best swan dive
in the shark-infested waters
i'm gonna pull out my tampon
and start splashing around

'cuz i don't care if they eat me alive
i've got better thing to do than survive

i've got a memory of your warm skin in my hand
and i've got a vision of blue sky and dry land

i'm cradling the hardest, heaviest part of me in my hand
the ship is pitching and heaving, my limbs are bobbing and weaving
and i think this is what i understand
i just need a little vaccination for my far-away vacation
i'm going to go ahead boldly because a little bird told me
that jumping is easy, that falling is fun

up until you hit the sidewalk, shivering, stunned

and they can call me crazy if i fail
all the chance that i need
is one-in-a-million
and they can call me brilliant
if i succeed

gravity is nothing to me
moving at the speed of sound
i'm just gonna get my feet wet
until i drown...

Iowa by Dar Williams is also something played at the Progressive show is a song I had purposely tried to avoid for various reasons. But then my wonderful colleague told me some things that made me think of this song.
I want to give it to her because of her current troubles. Plus how could this song not remind me of the midwest and Luther College. What a great place, what an awful place, what a place it was.

Iowa: Dar Wlliams
I've never had a way with women,
but the hills of Iowa make me wish that I could
And I've never found a way to say "I love you",
but if the chance came by, oh, I, I would

But way back where I come from, we never mean to bother,
we don't like to make our passions other people's concern
And we walk in the world of safe people,
and at night we walk into our houses and burn.

(chorus:)
Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, Iowa
Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, Iowa

How I long to fall just a little bit,
to dance out of the lines and stray from the light
But I fear that to fall in love with you
is to fall from a great and gruesome height
So I asked a friend about it, on a bad day,
her husband had just left her, she sat down on the chair he'd left behind
She said, "What is love? Where did it get me?
Whoever thought of love is no friend of mine."

(chorus)

Once I had everything, I gave it up
for the shoulder of your driveway and the words I've never felt
And so for you, I came this far across the tracks,
ten miles above the limit and with no seatbelt (and I'd do it again)
For tonight I went running through the screen doors of discretion,
for I woke up from a nightmare that I could not stand to see:
You were a-wandering out on the hills of Iowa
and you were not thinking of me.

Kate and Allie

Has anyone seen Kate & Allie an old sitcom with Susan St. James and Allie played by Jane Curtain.  It is seriously one of the funniest shows and it is on Netflix watch it now, which, is how I got interested.  Of course it is the 80's and not perfect...but some of the episodes are particularly hilarious.

The following clip is pretty entertaining as it is situated in the context of the L word since it is the lesbian episode

But there are even funnier episodes and they all end with this theme song-the theme song at the end? What a concept. Anyway, I think it's super funny for what it is, a sort of prelude to Sex and the City...

Happy Cakes: The Best Place On Earth

A bakery that just makes cupcakes-sounds too good to be true. But at Happy Cakes, in Denver, cupcakes are their specialty. I became acquainted with the shop after one of my professors told me that she drives there from an outlying suburb-that's how good it is. So what started as a quaint relationship has now turned to deep passionate love-love for cupcakes. By now I have tried almost all of their flavors, my favorites include maple bacon, snickerdoodle, peanut butter cup, cosmo (which Martha Stewart mentioned in her magazine) but most of all Rum and Coke-yummy. While the regular sizes are great if you just stop by the store I would highly recommend pre-ordering the small sized cakes-the perfect one to two bite amuse bouche perfect amount of frosting to compliment the cake. They also make a jumbo size although I cannot imagine anyone choosing to order those.

That's Not My Name

This is my theme song bcuz no one ever knows my effing name and I am like Hey Biotches I'm Hott so you should know me and my name!
--

That's Not My Name, THe Ting Tings
Four letter word just to get me along
It's a difficulty and i'm biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now

Holding back, everyday the same
Don't wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name
(ame, ame, ame)

They call me 'hell'
They call me 'Stacey'
They call me 'her'
They call me 'Jane'
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

They call me 'quiet girl'
But i'm an 'ayet' (?)
Maybe 'Joleisa'
Always the same
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

I miss the catch if they through me the ball
I'm the last kid standing up against the wall
Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now

So alone all the time at night
Lock myself away
Listen to me, i'm not
Although i'm dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name
(ame, ame, ame)

They call me 'hell'
They call me 'Stacey'
They call me 'her'
They call me 'Jane'
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

They call me 'quiet girl'
But i'm an 'ayet' (?)
Maybe 'Joleisa'
Always the same
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?
Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?
