stuff and nonsense, missy higgins

the thing about itunes as well as most websites these days is that they now are able to make predictions about music/book/products you will like from the things you purchase and browse. Now in some ways I think this is odd and Big Brotherish-however at least on itunes they tend to be fairly accurate and occasionally i run into an artist that I truly enjoy and am glad I was introduced even if it was in this way. Take for instance Missy Higgins who's EP Where I Stood was a recommendation. I listened, purchased, and am now in love with said EP, especially the song Stuff and Nonsense. I listened to her other stuff and I wasn't as inspired-so in the end i am very very glad that itunes is stalking me in this way...sometimes...

Lyrics
-
Missy Higgins, Stuff and Nonsense

Disobey my own decisions
I deserve all your suspicions
First it's yes and then it's no
I dilly dally down to duo
But I've got no secrets that I babble in my sleep
I won't make promises to you that I can't keep

And you know that I love you
Here and now not forever
I can give you the present
I don't know about the future
That's all stuff and nonsense

I once lived for the future
Everyday seemed one day closer
Greener on the other side
Yes I believed before I met you
But I soon learned your love burned brighter than the stars in my eyes
Now I know how and when, I know where and why

And you know that I love you
Here and now not forever
I can give you the present
I don't know about the future
That's all stuff and nonsense

Hi,

I understand that you posted this blog a few months ago now but I just thought I would just comment on how you mentioned that most of Missy's other music had the same effect of Stuff and Nonsense on you. And I just thought (if you haven't already heard it) I would point you in the direction of the original Stuff and Nonsense (written by Tim Finn and recorded by Split Enz in 1979)

As far as I know the rest of Missy Higgins's songs are written by her but Stuff and Nonsense was a cover version she did for a CD a few years ago called "She Will Have Her Way" which was female artists (from Australia and New Zealand) singing the songs of Tim and Neil Finn.

I don't know where you're from or how old you are but if you like Stuff and Nonsense and haven't heard much of Split Enz I would recommend pretty much most of their songs including "I Hope I Never", "Message to my girl" "Poor Boy" ummmm and heaps of others, and then obviously a follow on to this would be Crowded House "Fingers of Love" "together Alone" (which is sung partly in Maori) and then the Finn Bros more recent stuff they have done together.

Missy does sing Stuff and Nonsense quite well but with her writing she probably has so far peaked at Scar.

A female singer/songwriter (from a few years ago) who I like is Katie Noonan (not so much her recent work but her work from when she was in George) and actually the first time I saw Missy Higgins live was very early in her career she supported George on an "intimate" concert tour they did. The only thing about George is that I tend not to like the songs written by Katie's brother Ty Noonan as much (and they tend to do 50/50)

Ummm anyway I will stop rambling, please disregard all of this if you had heard the original of Stuff and Nonsense. But I hope i have given you a few more things that you may like

Oh and I also quite like the song Look Up by Toni Collette and the Finish (although I was a bit skeptical about an actress making the transistion to music - it felt a bit too much like all the ex soap stars like Kylie and Danni MInogue)

Anyway I hope i haven't bored you.

Thanks,

Lyndal (lyndalmarli@gmail.com)
